Google’s self-driving cars have had 11 “minor accidents” in six years.

According to Associated Press, three accidents involving Google’s cars have taken place since September in California.

However, Chris Urmson, leader of Google’s self-driving car project, said that the accidents were “minor” and caused “no injuries”.

He went on to say that the accidents happened over 1.7 million miles in which either the car may have been self-driving or a person had been required to be behind the wheel.

“Not once was the self-driving car the cause of the accident,” wrote Google’s Urmson in a blog post.

“Even when our software and sensors can detect a sticky situation and take action earlier and faster than an alert human driver, sometimes we won’t be able to overcome the realities of speed and distance; sometimes we’ll get hit just waiting for a light to change.

“And that’s important context for communities with self-driving cars on their streets; although we wish we could avoid all accidents, some will be unavoidable.”
