Work on a major scheme to create “Europe’s longest” substantially segregated cycle ways is due to begin in the capital early next year according to Transport for London.
Two new routes have been unveiled by London Mayor Boris Johnson as part of a £913m investment designed to improve cycling in London.
A north-south route will run for three miles from Kings Cross to Elephant and Castle, and an east-west route will run an epic 18 miles from Barking all the way out to Acton.
According to the BBC, Johnson said: “Getting more people on to their bikes will reduce pressure on the road, bus and rail networks, cut pollution, and improve life for everyone, whether or not they cycle themselves.”
A key part of the design will be a fully segregated cycle lane on the A40 Westway, necessitating the removal of an existing traffic lane.
The new routes are due to open in March 2016.
