Vince Cable and Nick Clegg were snapped drinking pints of beer at a London pub yesterday in an apparent show of unity after the Liberal Democrats were roundly clobbered in the European Elections and sparks flew after talk of a leadership battle.

The event, which was ostensibly held to highlight new changes to the law which will help pub landlords, was also an opportunity to quash questions over the effect of former Lib Dem peer Mathew Oakeshott’s polls in Nick Clegg’s constituency.

The Lib Dem MPs were accused of pulling a “Farage”, by commentators on Twitter, as the UKIP leader is frequently snapped displaying his support for Britain’s pub and beer trade.

As they left, Clegg said that the pair had had “a very nice drink”.
