Children under 16 could soon be locked out of social media entirely, the government has confirmed.
Ministers say the crackdown is aimed at protecting youngsters from online dangers including cyberbullying, mental health risks, and inappropriate content.
Major platforms will be forced to verify ages and implement strict parental controls — or face heavy fines. Children over 16 will still be allowed online but under tighter safeguards.
Experts warn the move will be a “game-changer” for families, schools, and social media companies, with a new era of enforced digital safety just months away.
One government source said: “We are acting to protect children. Their safety comes first — no exceptions.”
Parents have welcomed the move, though some critics argue it could push teens to find workarounds or unregulated platforms.
The legislation follows months of consultations and is expected to come into force before the end of the year, marking one of the most significant interventions in children’s online lives in UK history.
