We all complained about the unbearable heat on public transport in the capital this summer.

And it looks like our grumbles didn’t fall on deaf ears.

Transport for London (TfL) is spending £2m on fitting new busses with windows that open.

All 550 Routemasters that launched in 2012 will be retrofitted with windows that open. A further of 250 buses that are yet to be built will have opening windows too.

Heat levels on the upper deck on some buses topped 30 degrees in May this year.

Director of buses Mike Weston said: “We were aware of passenger concerns about the cooling system on the New Routemaster and the Mayor asked us to work with Wrights to look at possible design options to improve passenger comfort.

“We’re pleased they’ve now been able to come up with an affordable and working design to install opening windows, which we anticipate will have been installed across our entire fleet by next summer.”
