King’s Ukraine message reshaped by Kremlin media into war propaganda

Russian state and pro-Kremlin media have distorted a speech by King Charles III in Washington, falsely claiming he called on the United States to prepare for war with Russia.

In reality, the King made no reference to Russia in his address to Congress, instead urging continued support for Ukraine to secure what he described as a “just and lasting peace”.

Highlighting historic UK-US cooperation, he said the two nations had stood “shoulder to shoulder” through global conflicts including the two World Wars, the Cold War, Afghanistan and other major security challenges.

“Today… that same, unyielding resolve is needed for the defence of Ukraine and her most courageous people,” he said.

However, Russian outlets seized on the remarks and recast them as a direct call for military confrontation with Moscow.

The pro-Kremlin newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda claimed the King had urged the US to “prepare for war with Russia and activate Article 5 of NATO”, while Zvezda ran a headline stating that the monarch had called for preparations for conflict.

Komsomolskaya Pravda wrote: “[King] Charles called on the US to prepare for war with Russia and activate Article 5 of NATO.”

Other outlets, including Moskovsky Komsomolets and ultranationalist broadcaster Tsargrad, repeated similar narratives, alleging that the speech amounted to a call for a Western war against Russia.

A Kremlin-aligned war commentator, Aleksei Zhivov, went further, claiming the speech demonstrated Britain was “dragging the global democrats into a major conflict with Russia”, while warning of an eventual “major war with the West”.

Zhivov said that the UK “continues to drag the ‘global democrats’ into a major conflict with Russia — and it will achieve its goal….

“A major war with the West awaits us, and the longer we delay, the more difficult the entry conditions will be, and the less public opinion will accept this war.

“We need to deal with Ukraine now, while Europe is not yet ready for a long war with us.”

TV Tsargrad said: “Charles III delivered an openly militaristic speech to the US Congress.

“The monarch called on the American government to prepare for war with Russia to defend Ukraine and ‘its courageous people’.

“For added effect, he reminded the congressmen how the British and Americans had fought shoulder to shoulder in two world wars, the Cold War, and Afghanistan. Congress responded with a thunderous ovation.”

The outlet concluded: “The British Crown is still trying to get ahead of the game in whipping up Russophobic war hysteria.”

The narratives are part of a wider pattern of Russian state media framing Western support for Ukraine as evidence of aggressive intent towards Russia itself — a long-standing line used to justify the invasion and rally domestic support.

Nevolfovich Telegram channel wrote: “1946. Winston Churchill’s speech in Fulton, California, marked the beginning of the Cold War.

“2026. Charles III openly called for preparations for war with Russia in the US Congress. The British monarch received a standing ovation.”

The Kremlin has repeatedly accused Western governments of waging a proxy war against Moscow through Ukraine, while Western leaders maintain their assistance is aimed at defending Ukrainian sovereignty and deterring further Russian aggression.

The distortion of the King’s remarks follows a broader trend of Kremlin media reinterpreting Western political speeches, often stripping them of context and reframing them as direct threats to Russia.
