The Chancellor started her “emergency Budget” on Wednesday saying that Labour was elected last year to “bring change” to the UK and provide security for working people.

Rachel Reeves said she is “proud” of what the government has achieved to “secure Britain’s future in a world that is changing before our eyes,” which was met by laughter in the House of Commons.

She touched on Russia’s war in Ukraine warning this brings various challenges in an “uncertain” global economy which has seen a rise in costs worldwide.

Reeves said, “This moment demands an active government.

“A government not stepping back but stepping up.”

The Chancellor insists Britain has the “strengths” to “reach its full potential” and the government will deliver for the working population.

Speaking about the independent Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) forecast, she insisted her fiscal rules are “non-negotiable” and blamed Liz Truss for her disastrous 2022 mini-Budget.

“There is nothing progressive, there is nothing Labour, about working people paying the price of economic irresponsibility.”

Reeves added, that Labour was elected as the public trusted that they “would never take risks with the public finances,” which again was met with laughter.
