Can AI revolutionise hiring in 2026?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a phrase we’re all hearing from all angles, and recruitment is no exception to the chatter.

The use of AI in recruitment has tripled in the last year, and this number is only expected to keep on rising. Businesses are realising that they can improve the efficiency of their hiring processes and find top candidates, meaning AI tools are becoming increasingly popular.

Although 70% of recruiters say that AI is improving their hiring decisions, there is still a lot of reluctance from many businesses, but what exactly is holding them back?

In this article, we’ll discuss the ways that AI has already transformed the hiring process in 2026, as well as the concerns that are making others less sure about making changes for themselves.

Where recruitment can benefit from AI

The addition of AI within HR teams is becoming essential within many businesses, completely transforming the way they operate and freeing up hours of time that can be spent providing a smooth hiring experience for both the business and the candidates.

  • Automate the filtering of job applications. Receiving hundreds of applications for a single role can be overwhelming for recruiters, especially when dealing with multiple job listings at once. Now that AI tools are able to filter through applications and shortlist candidates based on their suitability for the role, it can save hours. As well as this, it means that applications don’t get overlooked, giving everyone a chance to be considered.
  • Use AI for first-stage interviews. Interviews use up a lot of time and resources within a company, so switching to virtual AI interviews can be incredibly efficient. This allows candidates to make their way through a set of pre-recorded questions in their own time, and then these can be reviewed by the recruiter to assess whether they will be brought in for an in-person interview.
  • Prevent unconscious bias. Unconscious bias has long been a big issue in recruitment, as it sees candidates from certain backgrounds being prematurely judged, often without the recruiter even realising. By using AI to help with the hiring process, candidates are assessed purely based on their skills and experience, with personal information such as their name and gender often not being visible until a later stage.
  • Speed up the hiring process. The hiring process can be incredibly time-consuming and often leads to frustrating delays for both the recruiter and the candidates. AI is able to speed up a lot of the repetitive admin tasks, so time is freed up to focus on what really matters – getting to know the candidates and making the best possible decisions for the business.
  • Improve the candidate experience. Although candidates are competing for a job in a competitive market, the hiring process forms a first impression of the business they’re applying to work at, and if it’s a negative one, it could deter them. Common frustrations are a lack of communication and poor time management, so using AI to set up interview timings and provide updates on the process can overcome these issues.

Why are businesses still reluctant to introduce AI?

Even though there are clear benefits to using AI in the hiring process, some companies are still hesitant to do so.

One main concern is not using human judgment. Since recruitment has long seen hiring managers manually filter through applications, interview candidates, and make their selection, the thought of losing control over the process is concerning. Although AI can assess CVs against the key words and phrases in the job description, it may not always be able to determine suitability for the role with 100% accuracy.

Another common reason for hesitancy to introduce AI is the impact it could have on brand image. People worry that if all businesses are hiring using AI, they will not be able to portray their brand image and communication skills. For businesses that have a lively culture that is a big part of their company, they prefer the idea of keeping the human-to-human interactions as they are.

Since AI is such a new concept to businesses, it is no wonder that not everyone is willing to take the leap. When a team has been using the same hiring process for years, letting go of their control and letting AI take over the wheel feels unnatural. In many cases, it requires small changes or a training session to initiate a change in mindset and show the benefits.

How 2026 has changed hiring processes for good

Although technology has been gradually improving the hiring process for many years, the sudden rise of AI has quickly made traditional recruitment strategies redundant.

Since AI has the ability to save recruiters hours of time every single day and improve the quality of their hires, it feels like a no-brainer for many businesses.

With that being said, the key is to not let the implementation of AI remove all of the human elements from the process. If candidates feel like they are just speaking to robots, they are not going to build up that all-important relationship with their potential new employer.

By finding a balance between time-saving tools and human judgment, businesses can transform their hiring process and make their growth strategy all the more achievable.
