The Louvre museum in Paris has reopened following Sunday’s heist and it has now been revealed that €88 million of jewellery was stolen.

The Louvre, home to the world-famous Mona Lisa, continues to review its protective strategies, and Director Laurence des Cars will address the cultural committee at the French Senate today on how enhanced security services and surveillance systems are safeguarding the museum’s priceless artworks.

Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau said on Tuesday, “The Louvre curator estimated the damages to be €88 million.”

Beccuau added that should the thieves have the “very bad idea of melting down these jewels” then they will not gain the real value of the stolen items.

French authorities have started a manhunt for the thieves and investigators believe it may have been an “organised crime group.”

France24 reported that as the thieves fled the Louvre they dropped a crown which is diamond studded.

An emerald and diamond necklace that Napoleon Bonaparte gave his wife was stolen, it once belonged to Empress Eugenie, the wife of Napoleon III which has almost 2,000 diamonds.
