The British Ministry of Defence said on Friday that Russian troops are digging trenches along the Crimean border 40 miles behind the front line.

This suggests that Russia are preparing for “major Ukrainian breakthroughs” to try and defend Crimea.

The MoD said, “Russian forces continue to prioritise refitting, reorganisation and the preparation of defences across most sectors in Ukraine.

“Some of these locations are up to 60 km behind the current front line, suggesting that Russian planners are making preparations in case of further major Ukrainian breakthroughs.”

The Ukrainian Deputy Defence Minister Volodymyr Havrylov said his armed forces could re-take Crimea as soon as December and they will not stop fighting until they claim victory.

Speaking to Sky News, “It’s only a matter of time and, of course, we would like to make it sooner than later.

“I think Russia can face a black swan in their country, inside Russia and it can contribute to the success of us with Crimea.

“We can step in Crimea, for example, by the end of December. Possible, possible. Not excluded that it be so.”

President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for the “liberation of our whole territory.”

He said, Crimea “is not just a state within a state, it’s part of our country and part of our sovereignty.

“Therefore, indeed the de-occupation of Crimea and Donbas will bring an end to the war.”

He warned, “A simple ceasefire won’t do the trick. Unless we liberate our whole territory, we will not bring peace.”
