Well, Business Insider got data from ComScore to list the top most popular web domains in the world, based on unique visitors per month. There are some big names on the list and also some dotcoms you may never have heard of…
1. Facebook.com – 836.7 Million Unique Visitors
The topper of all social networks, Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook is the biggest website in the world. After all, there are over one billion people in the world who now have Facebook profiles and the world’s population is just under seven billion. Although its share prices keep gliding and sliding, it maintains its top position with over 830 million unique visitors.
2. Google.com – 782.8 Million Unique Visitors
No surprises here, Google is now a verb. From weather forecasts to stock market tips to checking your internet connection, we Google everything. No wonder, every day the search engine goliath answers more than one billion questions from people in 146 languages in 181 countries around the globe.
3. YouTube.com – 721.9 Million Unique Visitors
In 2006, YouTube was bought by Google for $1.65bn. Since then, it’s made Gangnam Style singer Psy a star, One Pound Fish singer Muhammad Nazir an overnight sensation and 22-year-old SB.TV founder Jamal Edwards a very rich man. There are over four billion videos viewed every day and over three billion hours of video watched each month on YouTube.
4. Yahoo.com – 469.9 Million Unique Visitors
Did you know that Yahoo stands for “Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle”? Founded in 1994, Yahoo might be the fourth biggest website of the world but it has received flak for its constant hiring and firing of its CEOs. The Yahoo board fired CEO Carol Bartz in 2011 over the phone and replaced her with Scott Thompson. Thompson stepped down in 2012 following accusations that he lied about educational qualifications on his CV. Then in July 2012, Marisa Mayer came onboard as CEO and there have been no twists in the Yahoo CEO tale since.
5. Wikipedia.org – 469.6 Million Unique Visitors
The online encyclopedia, Wikipedia has 24 million articles and more than 100,000 contributors writing articles in 285 languages. Often slammed for its inaccuracy, the website made headlines last year for its protests against the US Stop Online Piracy Act (Sopa) and Protect Intellectual Property Act (Pipa).
6. Live.com – 389.5 Million Unique Visitors
Owned by Microsoft, Live.com is the biggest email service in the world as it’s made up of both Outlook and Hotmail.
7. QQ.com – 284.1 Million Unique Visitors
China’s Google, QQ.com is a search engine and instant messaging service that registered over 784 million active user accounts with approximately 100 million users online at a time by September 2012.
8. Microsoft.com – 271.7 Million Unique Visitors
Let’s face it, so many of us rely on Microsoft be it Microsoft Word for anything we type on the computer, Microsoft Excel for all our spreadsheets and PowerPoint for all those presentations to bag clients. No wonder, it’s the seventh biggest website of the world.
9. Baidu – 268.7 Million Unique Visitors
Another Chinese search giant, Baidu provides an index of over 740 million web pages, 80 million images, and 10 million multimedia files.
10. MSN.com – 254.1 Million Unique Visitors
A Microsoft product, MSN debuted in 1995 as an online service and internet service provider but has now become one of the most-visited websites in the world for shopping, e-mail, news, money, search, chat and more.
