In the current circumstances, 7 in 10 (70%) say it is likely they will consider staying at home or doing various daytrips from where they live, a ‘staycation’. Had there been no coronavirus pandemic, 65% say this would be a likely consideration.
Young people are significantly more likely to be considering a trip abroad despite current circumstances. More than four in ten (44%) 18-34-year olds say they are likely to consider going somewhere in Europe within the next 12 months while 36% are likely to consider going somewhere other than Europe. Meanwhile, only 29% of 35-54-year olds and 25% of those aged over 55 are considering a trip to the continent, even fewer are considering going further, just 18% of 35-54s and 11% of 55+s.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Londoners are most likely to say they will consider travelling abroad within the next year. Forty-four per cent say it is likely they will consider a holiday somewhere in Europe, with a further quarter (25%) likely to consider going somewhere further afield.
Parents and guardians are more likely to go (or perhaps escape) to Europe or somewhere else abroad than those without childcare responsibilities. Four in 10 (38%) of those with a child in their household say it is likely they will consider going to Europe within the next 12 months while 3 in 10 (29%) of those without a child say the same. A quarter of parents (26%) and guardians plan to go somewhere other than Europe, this drops to 18% of those without children.
Commenting on the findings, Ipsos MORI Research Director Keiran Pedley said: “Understandably the coronavirus pandemic has had a profound impact on the British holidaymaker’s plans this year, with far fewer considering a holiday in Europe or beyond than would in normal circumstances. These numbers show the travel and tourism sector faces a real challenge getting back to anything resembling a sense of normality in the near future.”
