Halifax bank name set to disappear after 173 years

A familiar name on Britain’s high streets for more than a century is set to vanish, as Halifax begins the final stage of its transformation into Lloyds.

The banking giant has confirmed that all Halifax customer accounts will eventually move under the Lloyds banner in a major rebranding operation that will bring an end to one of Britain’s best-known financial names.

Customers have been reassured that they do not need to take any immediate action, with Lloyds Banking Group saying people will be contacted directly as the changes are rolled out.

The move ends a remarkable chapter for Halifax, which was founded in West Yorkshire in 1853 and grew from a local building society into one of the UK’s largest mortgage providers.

For generations, the Halifax name became synonymous with home ownership, savings and high street banking — making the decision to retire the brand a symbolic moment for Britain’s financial landscape.

Lloyds Banking Group, which acquired Halifax in 2009, said the decision forms part of a wider effort to simplify its collection of brands and create a more unified customer experience.

Jas Singh, Lloyds Banking Group’s chief executive of consumer relationships, said Halifax customers would keep the features they already use, including their existing app experience, branch support, sort code and account numbers.

He said the change would allow customers to access the wider range of services and technology available under Lloyds.

The company insisted the move is not a withdrawal from the communities where Halifax has traditionally had a strong presence.

Lloyds said it remains committed to Halifax town and the wider Yorkshire and Humber region, where around 3,000 employees are based at its Trinity Road office.

No job losses have been announced as part of the rebrand.

The changes are expected to take place gradually, with Halifax branches either converted into Lloyds branches or moved closer to existing Lloyds locations during 2027.

The disappearance of the Halifax name reflects a broader transformation across Britain’s banking sector, where long-established brands are being consolidated as customers increasingly move towards digital services.

But for many customers, the change marks the end of an era.

After 173 years on Britain’s financial map, the Halifax name is preparing to become part of banking history.
