A senior German military official has issued a stark warning that Russian President Vladimir Putin could unleash the Russian military on Europe if given the chance.
Major General Wolf-Jürgen Stahl, President of Germany’s Federal Academy for Security Policy, claimed that Europe is already facing a steady stream of Russian cyberattacks, which could escalate into a broader military offensive.
Speaking at a security forum, he said that the consequences of such an assault could include “things we cannot even imagine,” underscoring the seriousness of the threat.
“Europe must act decisively to strengthen its military, economic, and social structures,” Stahl said.
“Failure to do so could leave the continent vulnerable to a Russian attack on a scale we have not seen before.”

Stahl told the German-British Society, “When I see how Putin has acted up to now and the way he is, in my assessment, on a mission against the West, then there is no question of whether he will use military means. If he gets the opportunity, he will use them.”
He said, “People will immediately say ‘Er, we don’t need to fight at all. We have to resolve it diplomatically. We can’t resolve it militarily’.
“I don’t know what discussions, what currents might be unleashed here in Germany. I do have a certain concern about that.”
He added, “If Nato territory is occupied by Russian soldiers, then Nato has to say: ‘How do we chuck them out so that the territory is restored to Nato, not just de jure but de facto?’
“The world is coming apart at the seams.
“It’s turbulent. It’s rough. It’s lawless, it’s in a state of disorder… we urgently need to work on shoring up our foundations.”
Europe must strengthen defences
The German army chief emphasized that the West must urgently shore up its foundations to deter aggression. He cited multiple pressures on European security, including the integrity of the NATO alliance, Germany’s role within the European Union, and the continent’s economic and social cohesion.
A group of retired military leaders, former ministers, and security experts have warned the Prime Minister that Britain is facing a “1936 moment,” admitting the UK’s armed forces are not ready for war.
In an open letter to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, the signatories called for an urgent doubling of defence spending to five per cent of GDP.
The warning comes amid rising tensions with Russia and concerns that the United Kingdom’s military readiness has been eroded by years of underinvestment.
The letter, drafted by the Defence on the Brink podcast team, cites historical parallels with Europe on the eve of World War II, suggesting Britain risks repeating the mistakes of the past if it does not act decisively.
Criticism of US leadership
In a pointed critique, Stahl also commented on the United States’ role in European security, calling President Donald Trump an “erratic dealmaker with authoritarian leanings,” according to remarks reported by the Daily Mail. He suggested that inconsistent leadership in Washington could weaken NATO’s ability to respond to threats from Moscow.
Rising tensions in Europe
Stahl’s warnings come amid rising tensions between Russia and NATO, with recent years seeing increased troop movements, military exercises, and cyber operations across Eastern Europe. Analysts note that European nations are particularly concerned about Russian hybrid tactics, combining cyberattacks, misinformation campaigns, and conventional military threats.
The general’s stark message serves as a reminder of the persistent strategic challenge posed by Moscow and the urgent need for European countries to coordinate defense, maintain social cohesion, and strengthen alliances.
“Putin is looking for openings,” Stahl warned. “If we are not prepared, Europe will pay a price that we cannot even begin to imagine.”
