Drone that hit RAF Akrotiri shows ‘Iranian and Russian hallmarks’

RAF Akrotiri was struck by a kamikaze drone equipped with Russian components on March 1, raising urgent concerns about the UK’s ability to safeguard its personnel abroad.

The drone, launched from Lebanon by an Iranian-backed group, was found to contain a Kometa-B navigation system, which highlights Moscow’s collaboration with Tehran on drone technology.

Analysts say the wreckage recovered by British intelligence signals a new and dangerous phase of drone warfare targeting UK forces.

This incident occurred just days after Prime Minister Keir Starmer approved U.S. strikes on Iranian targets from British bases, a decision some allies believe came too late to prevent Iranian retaliation.

Sir Richard Knighton, the UK Defence Staff Chief, confirmed that the drone showed “Iranian and Russian hallmarks,” indicating the increasing sophistication of attacks against British personnel.

While President Donald Trump downplayed concerns over Russian involvement, security experts warn that this strike underlines the UK’s vulnerability in a conflict where Iranian proxies are armed with advanced technology.

“We don’t know, but it’s not doing very well, if they are,” Trump told journalists.

It’s not doing much, if you take a look at what’s happened to Iran over the past week.”

The attack has exposed significant gaps in the UK’s overseas defence posture.

Experts caution that without the rapid deployment of counter-drone systems and naval escorts, Britain’s bases in Akrotiri and Dhekelia could face further threats.

This situation is compounded by broader fears about the Middle East conflict, as HMS Dragon has only just begun its journey to Cyprus to serve as the UK’s first line of defence, raising questions about whether Britain’s military resources are overstretched.
