Denmark warns Trump they have ‘red lines that can’t be crossed’ over Greenland

The US President has told Europe to focus on Russia and Ukraine and “not Greenland” and warned that he will impose tariffs on the EU.

Donald Trump told NBC News in a phone call that Washington will “100%” hit EU countries with tariffs if no deal can be made over Greenland.

The US President said, “Europe ought to focus on the war with Russia and Ukraine, because, frankly, you see what that’s gotten, them.

“That’s what Europe should focus on – not Greenland.”

Trump was then asked if he will use military force to seize Greenland, he said, “No comment.”

NATO’s Secretary General Mark Rutte said he will keep working with Denmark and Greenland on security matters.

The European Union’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas warned that Europe will “hold its ground” over Trump’s tariff threats and she insisted they have a “slate of tools” they can use to protect themselves.

After a meeting with Denmark’s defence minister along with Greenland’s foreign minister in Brussels.

She wrote on X after the meeting on Wednesday later afternoon, “Arctic security is a shared transatlantic interest, and one we can discuss with our US allies.

“But tariff threats are not the way to go about this.

“Sovereignty is not for trade. We have no interest to pick a fight, but we will hold our ground. Europe has a slate of tools to protect its interests.”

The Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen told Sky News that Trump’s tariffs is “not the way forward.”

He told the broadcaster, “We have red lines that can’t be crossed,” he warned that all of Europe will respond to America over the tariffs threat.

Rasmussen added, “You can’t threaten your way to ownership of Greenland.

“You have a desire, you have a vision, you have a request, but you will never be able to achieve that by putting pressure on us.”

Donald Trump’s Treasury secretary Scott Bessent warned Europe that any retaliation to the tariffs will be “very unwise.”

Bessent told reporters at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, “I’ve been travelling, so I haven’t ‌been in touch (with European ⁠officials), but I ‌spoke to President Trump ‍and evidently there are a lot of inbounds, and I think everyone should take the ​president at his word.”

Bloomberg reported that Danish officials will not be at Davos this year over the growing and worrying situation with Greenland.

The WEF told Bloomberg in a statement, “We can confirm ​that the Danish ‍government will not be represented in Davos ‌this ⁠week.”
