10 ways small businesses can boost their marketing success

Small businesses don’t have the same resources as larger companies, which means they can’t dedicate as much to marketing. But this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t invest in marketing at all, it simply means that smaller businesses should be more focused and intentional about how they market their products and who they market to.

Here are some ways that smaller businesses can improve their marketing strategy and boost success rates, but without stretching limited resources too far.

1. Create a business website

A business website can be a great boon for businesses, even smaller ones. Most customers expect some kind of online presence and, even if they aren’t shopping online, they might want to learn more about your business through your website. Even a relatively simple website is better than nothing, because it gives you an opportunity to tell people about your company, your values, your products, and how to get in touch.

2. Use SEO strategies

Another good reason to create a business website is that it can open the way for some fantastic marketing opportunities. SEO, or search engine optimization, works by making your website more visible to potential customers. Essentially, you use the way people search for information and products to your advantage.

By adding content, such as a blog or pages explaining your services, you make your website more visible and noticeable to search engines and customers alike. This kind of marketing is free of charge, but you can also pay to boost online visibility.

3. Understand your market

When coming up with a marketing strategy, an important step is to make sure that you understand the market and the audience.

For example, a small bakery will have a very different target market than a B2B supplies business. One is marketing to individuals, while the other is marketing to larger businesses. So both businesses needs to take different approaches and use different strategies to better appeal to their target market.

While a general approach can work, remember that as a small business, you don’t necessarily have the ability to market to as many people as possible. So use a focused marketing strategy instead.

4. Level up your social media account

One great way to connect to more people is to grow your business on social media. Marketing is about making more people aware of your brand and this means being visible where people are. Billboards are in very public places for this exact reason.

Most people have a social media account, and by creating an account for your business, you create another way that they can learn about your brand and connect with it. Create regular, interesting, and relevant content on your social media account so people will want to follow it. This creates more opportunities for interaction and engagement, which makes your brand more of a household name.

5. Use influencer marketing

Another way to use social media is with influencer marketing. Influencers already have an audience and a following on social media, so by partnering with and sponsoring influencers, you can essentially borrow their audience.

It’s best to find influencers who share an audience with your brand. So, if your business is in the beauty industry, try to connect with beauty influencers because their audience will align with your brand.

While it might be tempting to always find the largest influencers to partner with, it can be best to look for smaller influencers in niche fields. People who have fewer followers often have a more loyal audience who are more engaged with them. There’s also the fact that larger influencers expect larger paychecks for sponsorships, whereas smaller influencers might be more reasonable.

6. Get involved in local events

The local community is a smaller business’s best friend. Look for local events and expos, as these will make your brand more noticeable to people who live in your area. This is especially important if you run a service-based business that’s tied to a certain location.

Find expos and events that align with your company. Some expos are specifically for local businesses, smaller businesses, businesses with younger owners, and businesses in a specific niche, such as food or craft businesses. These will attract an audience who happens to be your target market, so you’re more likely to make sales and connections.

7. Partner with other businesses

Speaking of connections, one great way to grow your target audience is to partner with other businesses. Some businesses are in similar niches and share an audience, but don’t directly compete with each other.

For example, the wedding industry is massive, and can encompass a lot of different businesses. By linking with other companies in the same niche, you can both benefit. A florist and a bakery can share customers. Or, in some cases, if you have too much work on at one time, you can refer customers to a partnered business and vice versa.

Other business owners can be allies, rather than rivals.

8. Build relationships with repeat customers

Another, arguably more important relationship to grow is with your current customers. While marketing is often designed to attract new customers, it’s also important to focus on existing customers and encourage them to come back.

As well as good customer service and a great product, make sure to build a relationship with your customers and even offer perks like discounts and loyalty schemes. As well as keeping a loyal customer base, you might even gain more customers through referrals and recommendations.

9. Promotions and discounts

When coming up with a pricing strategy, it’s important to consider the effect of sales and discounts. Ideally, you should always make a profit.

Discounts can attract new customers if you run a sale or promotion and they can encourage existing customers to come back, especially if they’re part of a loyalty program.

10. Outsource to marketing experts

Finally, one of the best way to improve your marketing is simply to outsource to the experts. A digital marketing agency can help your small business create a strategy that’s far more likely to work, and you’ll soon see the return on your investment.
