Russia has told the West that they are facing a “choice” of either starting talks with Moscow or face the “destruction” of their population.

Russia has said that war is no longer in “Kyiv’s favour,” the secretary of Russia‘s Security Council Sergei Shoigu has warned on Thursday.

Over the recent months Russian forces have rapidly advanced in eastern Ukraine which has seen Kyiv’s forces retreating and pulling back which has seen more and more towns captured.

Now that Donald Trump has won the presidential election Shoigu has raised the question over whether or not the US will stop supplying vast amounts of weaponry to Ukraine, which Moscow has been vocally critical about, the Kyiv Post reports.

Shoigu said, “Now when the situation in the theatre of combat is not in Kyiv’s faour, the West is faced with a choice: to continue financing (Kyiv) and the destruction of the Ukrainian population or recognize the current realities and start negotiating.”

In September President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Trump and the Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said he is confident that the US will continue to support Kyiv.

Shmyhal said on Thursday during the Kyiv International Economic Forum (KIEF), “Donald Trump is a strong leader. There is no doubt about it … We understand that we have bipartisan support for the United States … and most importantly, the society of the United States supports Ukraine.”

He said that last night Zelensky had a call with Trump and he described it an “extremely positive.”

“We can have restrained optimism about the development of events and clear actions on the part of our key partner, the United States,” Shmyhal added.

He said that Washington is committed to “the protection of democracy and democratic values.”

“Congress will continue to support Ukraine. Moreover, I think that we will see quite clear and fast steps from our partner. This is my assessment,” Shmyhal concluded.
