Uber worldwide boss set to arrive tomorrow to settle licence row
Just a day before Uber’s new chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi is due to arrive in London to meet with the head of transport regulator in a bid to keep operating in the city, the taxi company’s UK boss has reportedly quit the company for a new job.
Jo Bertram has been in charge of the UK as well as Ireland and a number of other countries in Northern Europe. While she has declined to comment on where she would be moving to, she has stated in her resignation email today: “An exciting new opportunity has arisen that will allow me to apply what I’ve learnt here and I’ll be able to share more details with you soon”.
“Given some of our current challenges, I’m also convinced that now is the right time to have a change of face, and to hand over to someone who will be here for the long haul and take us into the next phase,” she wrote in the email. Media reports suggest that Tom Elvidge, Uber’s London boss, will become the UK general manager on an interim basis.
Uber’s EMEA head, Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty, told Reuters: “Jo will remain with us over the next few weeks in order to help with a smooth transition, and I look forward to working closely with the excellent team she leaves behind.” Bertram had reportedly quit Twitter last year due to the online abuse she had been receiving.
Just 10 days ago, London’s transport regulator, TfL, had refused to renew the private hire operator license of Uber in the city for lacking in “corporate responsibility” and had cited the firm’s approach to reporting serious criminal offences and background checks on drivers. The San Francisco-based company is now appealing against this decision.
