BREAKING: Bill Gates dethrones Carlos Slim as the world’s richest man as Microsoft hits five-year high
— Bloomberg News (@BloombergNews) May 16, 2013
Thanks to Microsoft’s rising stock price hitting a five-year high, trading at around $34 a share, Gates has been able to leapfrog Mexican magnate Carlos Slim Helu. Microsoft stock has enjoyed a 26% boost this year, boosted by an 8% increase in revenue and 5% rise in operating profits over the last quarter.
This changes the rankings in Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index, which previously had the pair within touching distance of each other’s fortunes, with Slim at $73.2 billion compared to Gates’ $72.9 billion.
