Russian spies arrested for planning ‘espionage’ attacks ‘on military sites in Germany’

Two Russian spies have been arrested for planning attacks on the “facilities of US forces” in Germany to lessen the effectiveness of military support in Ukraine.

Prosecutors said on Thursday that the two Russian men known as Alexander J and Dieter S were arrested in Bayreuth on Wednesday in the southeastern state of Bavaria.

Dieter is the main Russian man who stands accused of belonging to a “foreign terrorist organisation” who was looking for targets and collecting information to attack “facilities of the US armed forces” who are based in Germany, the Kyiv Post reported.

Both are suspected of “having been active for a foreign intelligence service” for espionage and prosecutors said this is a “particularly serious case.”

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said the allegations of spying is “a particularly serious case of suspected agent activity for (Vladimir) Putin’s criminal regime.”

She added, “We will continue to thwart such threat plans,” and Germany stands with Ukraine.

Prosecutors said that Dieter S has been exchanging information since October 2023 with a person who is linked to Russian intelligence.

They added, “The actions were intended, in particular, to undermine the military support provided from Germany to Ukraine against the Russian aggression.”

The Russian men are accused to being ready “commit explosive and arson attacks mainly on military infrastructure and industrial sites in Germany.”

German publication Der Spiegal reported that the pair spied on military facilities including one massive US army base in Grafenwoehr in Bavaria which is also used to train troops ahead of war.

Among other things, there is an important military training area there where the US army trains Ukrainian soldiers, for example on Abrams battle tanks,” Der Spiegel wrote.

We know that the Russian power apparatus is also focusing on our country — we must respond to this threat with resistance and determination,” Justice Minister Marco Buschmann said Thursday.
