Expert warns coronavirus is ‘lurking’ as lockdown is being eased

29th May 20 12:05 pm

A World Health Organization expert has warned on Friday that coronavirus has “not gone away” and “it’s lurking, and we don’t always know exactly where it is.”

Dr David Nabarro works with the WHO Covid-19 special envoy warned over the Prime Minister’s lockdown easing that people must be on “constant defence.”

Dr Nabarro told the BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, “This virus has not gone away.

“It’s there. It’s lurking and we don’t always know exactly where it is. So, we have to be prepared as movements start to intensify for new outbreaks to build up very quickly.

“So, it’s gradual improvements in the ability of people to move but at the same time a great deal of caution. Being on the lookout for new cases appearing, often in very small clusters perhaps in residential accommodation or in factories.”

He warned that coronavirus is “really powerful” spreading through communities and said life will be a “different normal” from where we were seven months ago.

The Covid-19 special envoy added, “I’m in the shielded category and I do want to be able to see my family.

“I think it is really important that, in the next few months, all of us make sense of what we know about this virus and the risks, and then we ourselves, with support from our friends and support from of course public health authorities, are able to make choices that will enable us to live with this virus as a threat and at the same time get on with life.”

He warned over people visiting grandparents, the elderly and the vulnerable over hugging straight the way, and the virus will increase in winter months.

Boris Johnson said on Thursday that people should “try to avoid seeing people from too many households in quick succession.”

However, you can still meet people have picnics, BBQs meet friends in their gardens, but don’t use their toilet and bring your own plates, cutlery and food.
