The US have conducted bombing raids on two facilities used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in eastern Syria the Pentagon has said.

The US President Joe Biden said that air strikes were in “self-defence” following a spate of attacks on American bases by Iranian backed groups in the Middle East.

The Pentagon said that since 17 October there was 12 attacks in US bases and troops in Iraq and Syria which saw one killed.

The White House said in response to the attacks that they will respond “at a time and place of our choosing.”

Lloyd Austin, the Defence Secretary said, “These precision self-defence strikes are a response to a series of ongoing and mostly unsuccessful attacks against US personnel in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militia groups that began on October 17.”

Austin said President Biden ordered the strikes “to make clear that the United States will not tolerate such attacks and will defend itself, its personnel, and its interests.”

The US has deployed a F-16 squadron to the Middle East which has been seen as a “provocation” by the Kremlin.

The Kremlin said in Thursday that they are keeping a close eye on the US fighter jet squadron as there is growing concern of an escalation between Israel and Hamas.

The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, “Undoubtedly, this is a cause for our very close attention. Naturally, we closely follow the developments in the region.”
