Doomsday Clock warns the world is ‘perilously close to the precipice’ of nuclear destruction

28th Jan 25 4:15 pm

Scientists are urging the US, Russia and China to “pull the world back from the brink” of nuclear destruction as the Doomsday Clock has ticked one second closer to midnight.

This signals the world is “perilously close to the precipice” of Armageddon and the scientists have given a grim warning that “continuing on the current path is a form of madness.”

Daniel Holz, chair of Bulletin’s Science and Security Board said there hasn’t been enough progress on “existential risks threatening all of humanity.”

Holz added, “We thus move the clock forward. In setting the clock closer to midnight, we send a stark signal. Because the world is already perilously close to the precipice, any move towards midnight should be taken as an indication of extreme danger and an unmistakable warning.

“Every second of delay in reversing course increases the probability for global disaster.”

Bulletin member Dr Manpreet Sethi, who is a nuclear energy and defence expert warned, “Russia has suspended compliance with the New START treaty and withdrawn ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

“China is rapidly increasing its nuclear arsenal. And, the US has abdicated its role as a voice of caution.

“It seems inclined to expand its nuclear arsenal and adopt a posture that reinforces the belief that ‘limited’ use of nuclear weapons can be managed. Such misplaced confidence could have us stumble into a nuclear war.”

The Doomsday Clock was launched in 1947 which is controlled by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, it reveals how close the world is to destroying itself.

The clock is now at 89 seconds to midnight, meaning this is the closest it has ever been. Holz said threats to use nuclear weapons is “extremely alarming.”

Holz added, “A lot of the rhetoric is really disturbing and so there is this growing sense that some nation might end up using nuclear weapons, and that is terrifying.”

Dmitry Medvedev, the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, warned NATO last year there is a risk of a “nuclear war.”

Medvedev said that NATO leaders should stop sending weaponry to Ukraine or there will be a nuclear response from the Russian Federation.

Medvedev warned, “It never occurs to any of the poor to draw the following elementary conclusion from this.

“The defeat of a nuclear power in a conventional war may trigger a nuclear war.

“Nuclear powers have never lost major conflicts on which their fate depends.

“And this should be obvious to anyone. Even a Western politician with any trace of intelligence.”
