Ukrainian forces capture ‘100 square kilometers’ of Russian territory in a major operation

9th Aug 24 3:18 pm

Officials in Kyiv have asked the Pentagon for permission to use ATACMS to help with their military operation as they have invaded the Kursk region, inside the Russian Federation.

Kyiv is arguing that by using the ATACMS it will help their forces to capture the Russian territory that will help to influence negotiations with Moscow, The Washington Post reports.

The lethal long-range missiles would strike military airfields inside Russian territory which is used for Vladimir Putin’s warplanes to take-off and conduct bombing raids on Ukraine.

An anonymous advisor to President Volodymyr Zelensky said, “This will give them the leverage they need for negotiations with Russia – this is what it’s all about.”

This is the first time since WWII that foreign troops have entered Russia and successfully captured a huge amount of territory in just three days.

The advisor said that within three days of their operation in Kursk they have captured around 100 square kilometers in the major operation and Ukrainian forces control of Gazprom’s Sudzha gas measuring station which is used to send fuel to Europe.

Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov has vowed to Putin that Russian forces will recapture Kursk Oblast.

General Gerasimov said, “The operation will be completed with the defeat of the enemy and reaching the state border.”

The Pentagon has said that Kyiv has the right to defend themselves from Russian attacks and the capturing of Russia’s Kursk region in Russia comply with Washington’s restrictions on the use of US weapons.

Deputy spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of Defense Sabrina Singh was asked if the Ukrainian operation in Kursk corresponds to Washington’s understanding of what Ukraine can do with US weapons, she replied, “yes, it is consistent with our policy.”

“We have supported Ukraine from the very beginning to defend themselves against attacks that are coming across the border and for the need for crossfires.

“So, they are taking actions to protect themselves from attacks that are coming from a region that are within the US policy of where they can operate, you know, our weapons, our systems, our capabilities.”

She added, “We don’t support long range attacks into (Russia). We’ve said that from the very beginning. I’m not going to draw, you know, a circular map here for you of where they can and can’t strike, but we’ve been very clear with the Ukrainians.”

The Pentagon made no direct comment over Ukrainian forces capturing the Kursk region, she said, “In terms of this actual operation that’s ongoing in the Kursk region that you’ve referenced, I’d refer you to the Ukrainians to speak more to that. We are getting more information, but really it’s for them to speak to their own operations.”
