Pub operator Greene King has reported “strong trading” for the two weeks covering Christmas and New Year’s as more British pub-goers toasted to pints of beers and ales at its outlets.

The company said Christmas and New Year sales soared 10.9 per cent and it achieved record Christmas Day sales of £7.7m.

Greene King, which brews ales such as Greene King IPA, Old Speckled Hen and Abbot Ale, said comparable sales at its pubs rose 3.2 percent for the 36-week period ending Jan 6, 2019.

It said it remains on course to dispose of 100-110 pubs and open around nine new pubs in the current financial year.
