Honda set to close Swindon car factory with 3,500 jobs at risk

Japanese car maker Honda are to, possibly announce, they are to close the car plant in 2022, putting 3,500 jobs at risk.

Sky News learned on Monday that the car manufacturer could be disclosing this on Tuesday morning.

If this is to be confirmed this will have a further devastating blow for ministers as they are hoping the UK will have a strong manufacturing economy after the EU withdrawal.

Honda will retain the Formula one motoring team and the European headquarters in Bracknell.

During January the manufacturer said they will shut their factory down in April for six days, to prepare for any post-Brexit disruptions.

Last year Ian Howells, Honda’s senior vice-president warned the government that if the UK leaves the EU with a no-deal Brexit it will cost Honda tens of millions of pounds.
