A NATO strike group with 9,000 troops on the world’s largest warship is set to hold military drills in a sign of force against Putin

The USS Gerald R Ford warship which is the first of a new generations of super aircraft carriers has left the Norfolk naval station.

The $13 billion aircraft carrier is the world’s largest warship and will carry a NATO strike group of 9,000 troops who will perform military drills in the Atlantic Ocean in a sign of force against Moscow.

Tensions are the highest it is has ever been between the West and Russia and the exercises will see the French, Germans, Spanish, and Swedish navies take part in exercises as they prepare for the event of possible war with Vladimir Putin.

The USS Gerald R Ford aircraft carrier holds 70 planes, helicopter, personnel and pilots and the warship set sail with three guided missile destroyers, supply ships and a cruiser.

Vice Admiral Dan Dwyer, Commander of the US 2nd Fleet, said, “The Atlantic is an area of strategic interest.

“Our primary goal is to contribute to a peaceful, stable, and conflict-free Atlantic region through the combined naval power of our Allies and partners.

“The deployment of USS Gerald R Ford’s carrier strike group is the natural progression of our renewed commitment to the Atlantic.”

Russia’s ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov warned this that the US are risking “a direct military clash” between Russia and the West as President Joe Biden is sending more military aid to Ukraine, including HIMARS in a package worth $625m.

“The Biden administration’s next security assistance package for Ukraine is expected to include four High Mobility Artillery Rocket System [HIMARS] launchers, munitions, mines and mine-resistant vehicles, two sources briefed on the $625 million package told Reuters on Monday,” according to a report, published on the website.

This a move that Russia percieves to be an “immediate threat to Moscow.”

He said, “We call on Washington to stop its provocative actions that could lead to the most serious consequence.”

Maria Zakharova, Russia’s Foreign Ministry warned, “If Washington decides to supply longer-range missiles to Kyiv, then it will be crossing a red line, and will become a direct party to the conflict.”

Zakharova added that Russia “reserves the right to defend its territory.”
