A US journalist for the New York Times has been shot dead by Russian troops and another has been wounded in Irpin near to the Ukrainian capital.

Police in Kyiv confirmed that one was shot in the neck and died whilst filming Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war torn country.

The police said, “In Irpin, the Russian occupiers have just shot the international journalists of the New York Times.

“One killed, one wounded. Now militiamen try to take out the victim from a combat zone.”

Russian forces are slowly advancing on Kyiv and Irpin are coming under heavy bombardment.

The killed journalist was identified by Ukrainian police as Brent Renaud, a 51-year-old who was a correspondent for the New York Times and a US citizen.

“Of course, the profession of a journalist is a risk, but US citizen Brent Renaud paid his life for trying to highlight the aggressor’s ingenuity, cruelty and ruthlessness,” Kyiv Region Police chief Andriy Nebytov said on Facebook.

Levy wrote on Twitter, “@nytimes is deeply saddened to learn of the death of an American journalist in Ukraine, Brent Renaud. Brent was a talented photographer and filmmaker, but he was not on assignment for @nytimes in Ukraine.
