Toyota set to recall 5.8m cars due to faulty Takata airbags

Is Takata in more trouble?

Toyota has had to recall another 5.8m car worldwide over potentially faulty airbags made by supplier Takata.

The main models affected are the Corolla and Yaris, most of these were sold in Japan, China and Europe.

These cars were produced in 2000 and 2001, and between April 2006 and December 2014.

Carmakers around the world have had trouble with airbags supplied by Takata in the past.

Toyota has recalled millions of airbags, 1.47m in Europe, 1.16m in Japan, 820,000 in China and 2.35m in other regions excluding the US.

The total recall amount of Takata airbags comes to a huge 23.1m. A total of 12 different car makers have had to recall the airbags, the total number of recalls is expected to hit well over the 100m mark.

Car part maker Takata is already facing trouble with massive compensation costs over its airbags which have been linked to 16 deaths around the world.
