The Russian security services (FSB) office building in Rostov, southern Russia is on fire and has been rocked by “powerful explosions.”

Russian state media outlet TASS reported that the Ministry of Emergency Situations is at the scene as the building is being ravaged by a huge fire.

Thick black smoke can be seen hundreds of metres high up in the sky and the FSB building is engulfed by fierce flames.

There is speculation there could be an ammunition room within the building which could be most likely as the FSB are normally armed.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations has claimed that there was an electrical fault in the wiring which caused “powerful explosions” which could be clearly heard from the building.

Footage from Telegram showed the first moments of the fire where an explosion can clearly be heard, which corroborates eyewitness claims.

The FSB building is based on the city of Rostov-on-Don which is around 75 miles from the Ukrainian border and 100 miles from Mariupol in Ukraine.

The regional Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations told Tass news agency, “The units left for [the address] Sievers, 20. The information is being specified.”

Last month Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian security services to step up with their intelligence to stop “sabotage groups” from entering the country which has seen a series of explosions in mainland Russia.

President Putin told the FSB to stop the illegal weapons from entering the Russian Federation and to bolster the maximum security in the four annexed regions of eastern Ukraine.

Putin accused Western intelligence of always being active in Russia and that they have “thrown additional personnel, technical and other resources against us.

“We need to respond accordingly,” to the West’s actions.

This comes as Ukraine warned that it “is possible” they could target sites “on Russian territory” as Kyiv are preparing for their spring counteroffensive.

Ukrainian Deputy Military Intelligence chief, Vadym Skibitsky warned, “It is possible that we will also destroy arms depots or military equipment on Russian territory, for example around the city of Belgorod.”
