Low-cost European airline ready to launch 100 routes from Ukraine

The low-cost European airline Wizz Air has said they are ready to open 100 routes from Ukraine in the first six months of Ukrainian air space being reopened.

Wizz Air CEO József Váradi said this will allow them to carry 5 million passengers a year, he said “we have big plans for Ukraine.”

Speaking at a conference Váradi said, “As soon as Ukraine is ready, we will be ready to resume (flights). We are not only considering the possibility of flying to Ukraine, but we are also going to fly from Ukraine, organising our base operations there.

“We have big plans for Ukraine… We have developed a plan to create a network of about 100 routes within the first 6 months, which will create a capacity of 5 million seats per year.

“And when you (Ukraine) are ready, we will be ready.

“Logistics as a driver of economic growth”

He revealed that Wizz Air officials have visited Ukraine several times and have held talks with those who are interested.

Váradi added, “We are very close to concluding commercial agreements with each of them (airports). I think we are really ready to work.”

On Monday Michael O’Leary the CEO of Ryanair said their proposal to reopen Kyiv and Lviv airports in Ukraine has been met with “radio silence.”

O’Leary has said reopening the airports is vital to Ukraine’s economy and that “somebody gives the airports a kick up the backside,” as he calls remain unanswered for two years.

O’Leary said at the Kyiv conference “We Build Ukraine” that restarting flights to Kyiv and Lviv is vital to rebuild the economy in Ukraine and there has been discussions over opening Lviv airport possibly by summer this year.

The Kyiv Independent reported, O’Leary said, “But disappointingly, we haven’t heard back from them for over two years.

“I am somewhat at a loss to understand why the airports are not getting ready for the resumption of flights and why the airports are not doing the agreement with Ryanair.”
