Hunt warns Chancellor of ‘shameless attempt’ to ‘lay grounds for tax rises’

29th Jul 24 4:42 pm

The former Tory Chancellor has accused the Labour Chancellor of a “shameless attempt” of preparing the “ground for tax rises.”

Jeremy Hunt who looked extremely angry with the Chancellor whilst seated in the House of Commons accused Rachel Reeves of preparing the way for tax rises in her 30 October Budget.

Hunt told MPs on Monday afternoon, “Today [Reeves] will fool absolutely no one with a shameless attempt to lay the grounds for tax rises.”

Earlier the Chancellor warned there is a £22 billion black hole in the public’s finances which they have “inherited” from the Tories.

Reeves vowed in a statement to MPs in Parliament on Monday afternoon that she and the government will set out “immediate action” and they will address the issues.

However, Hunt hit back and said that Reeves did in fact have privileged access from January to the Treasury civil servants, he noted that she would have seen then the £20 billion “black hole” which the Shadow Chancellor claims has “magically emerged.”

He went on to defend his time as the Tory Chancellor and said that under the Conservatives inflation is now half of what it was in 2010, including unemployment.

The Chancellor responded to Hunt and appeared to suggest that Hunt should say sorry for the Conservatives economic record, the Shadow Chancellor shook his head and said “rubbish.”
