Former Met chief ‘not impressed’ with Starmer’s response to the riots

6th Aug 24 10:49 am

The former Metropolitan Police chief Sir Paul Stephenson has slammed the Prime Minister and said he is “not impressed” with Sir Keir Starmer’s response or his attitude to the riots.

Starmer’s “two-tier” policing will simply add to more disturbance that the UK has and is still seeing across England,

Starmer has had widespread criticism over his handling of the riots across England and has even faced criticism from Elon Musk.

Musk wrote on his social media platform X that “civil war is inevitable” as the rioting continues in England.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s official spokesman said on Monday that there was “no justification for comments like that.”

“We’re talking about a minority of thugs who don’t speak for Britain,” he added.

Starmer said, “This is not protest, it is pure violence.

“We will have a standing army of public duty officers.

“We will ramp up criminal justice.

“We will apply criminal law online as well as offline.

“We will not tolerate attacks on mosques or on Muslim communities.”

Musk responded, “Shouldn’t you be concerned about attacks on *all* communities?”

Sir Paul said he is “not hugely impressed” with Starmer’s “strong phrases” over is so called strong words of action.

Sir Paul said on LBC that Starmer’s use of “phrases like standing army, ramping up, full force of the law… I rather think communities expect the full force of the to be used against thugs irrespective of who is motivating them.”

He said that the rioters “need to face the full force of the law,” Sir Paul added, “I get that politicians have to make strong statements.

“But on a personal basis I’m not impressed by it. I will be impressed by politicians continuing to support the police in the difficult job they do – that has not always been the case, has it”

Sir Paul was asked if Starmer should have had a COBRA meeting sooner, he said that MPs call the meeting so they are “seen to be doing somethings, and I get that.”

He warned, “These meetings need a clear focus, the right experts, and that the intelligence is accurate and comprehensive.”
