Rail commuters are set to face rush hour chaos today as South Western Railway (SWR) has been hit by a major signal failure.
The company said in a message to passengers: “Due to a major fault with Network Rail signalling systems between Woking and Surbiton, trains are unable to run on this line through to London Waterloo. We are advising all passengers who travel on the mainline (services from Weymouth, West of England, Portsmouth) and suburban (from Guildford to Waterloo) services that run through these stations, not to travel and to check for updates.”
Network Rail added the fault is so severe that trains were “unable to run this line through to Waterloo”. While the repairing work is on, it is not known how long it can take.

@SW_Help 07.43 #WorcesterPark to #waterloo is 20+ minutes late, no announcements, no platform staff and I have to walk through clouds of cigarette and vape smoke. Have you just abandoned your customers? @swtrains_watch

#Waterloo screwed up today – major signalling failure. Worth noting that's the responsibility of Network Rail – the nationalised company#carefulwhatyouwishfor

@SW_Railway engineering work with bus replacement, strikes & signalling issues. EPIC FAIL South West Rail 🤦🏻♀️ and why can’t I claim for any of this disruption? Joke of a service! #waterloo
