Couples now banned from shopping together at Sainsbury’s

On Friday Sainsbury’s have now banned coupled from shopping together in their stores to promote social distancing measures.

The supermarket said that staff will now ask for only one person from a couple to go inside their stores across the UK.

Similar moves have already started with Waitrose, Tesco and Aldi, and across Europe these measures have been in place for some weeks.

Sainsbury’s chiefs have said a parent with a child, who are not able to be left at home are allowed to shop together.

Sainsbury’s chief executive Mike Coupe wrote in a letter to customers on Friday, “From today, we are asking everyone to please only send one adult per household to our shops.

“This helps us keep people a safe distance apart and also helps to reduce queues to get into stores.

“Our store teams will be asking groups with more than one adult to choose one adult to shop and will ask other adults to wait.

“Children are of course welcome if they are not able to stay at home.”

Last month Sainsbury’s announced to their customers and the country that they have taken steps “to make sure everyone has access to food and essential items.”

In order to provide essential items for everyone Sainsbury’s are working with their suppliers to get “even more stock of essential items and we are adding warehouse capacity on a daily basis.”
