Chelsea Football Club could have to pay its former manager Jose Mourinho around £1.5m if he starts managing Manchester United from early next year.

Mourinho is currently the favourite to replace Louis Van Gaal. However, he may have to accept a big pay cut to manage the team.

According to various media reports, Chelsea will have to pay Mourinho to make up the shortfall in any wage cut Mourinho accepts.

In August this year, Chelsea gave Mourinho a new contract worth around £10m a year.

If the Portuguese agrees to manage Manchester United, he is expected to earn £6m a season.

After Jose Mourinho was sacked last week, Chelsea interim manager Guus Hiddink praised Mourinho for his track record.

“If you look at his [Mourinho’s] record over the years, it’s an amazing record at various clubs,” said Hiddink. “The titles he won, many titles. Lots of respect for that. But, nevertheless, things happen in football and people take the decision they’ve taken.”
