Would you take a visit to the new build?

Claridge’s, a five-star hotel situated in Mayfair has been given the go ahead to build Britain’s biggest mega-basement.

The news comes after planners ruled that the new build would enhance London’s reputation as a luxury destination.

The excavation will create extra space where a new swimming pool, sauna, wine cellar, bakery and an in-house chocolatier will be built.

The proposal was given the go ahead despite Westminster’s councils crack down on basement digs.

Robert Davis, deputy leader and cabinet member for the built environment, told the Evening Standard: “Additional basements on an already major refurbishment of the historic Claridge’s hotel in a commercial part of the city was regarded as proportional given the enhancement to this world-famous, world-class hotel.”

“In particular, the extended basement will provide a new spa which will ensure Claridge’s remains a sophisticated, modern five-star hotel that can compete with global competition.”

The basement is part of a major extension and modernisation programme, which will see 40 rooms added on two new floors at the 203 room hotel.
