Yemen telecoms firm has said that the Iranian backed Houthis militants could be planning to sabotage western internet cables in the Red Sea.

The network of submarine cables are essential for the transmission of financial data, the warning came after a Houthis linked Telegram published a map of the internet cables that run across the bottom of the Red Sea.

A message accompanied by the map said, “There are maps of international cables connecting all regions of the world through the sea. It seems that Yemen is in a strategic location, as internet lines that connect entire continents – not only countries – pass near it.”

Yemen’s General Telecommunications Corporation said that there are 16 internet cables that are as thick as a hosepipe and they are vulnerable.
