The US President has signed an executive order for the Pentagon to be renamed the “Department of War.”

The US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth will then be called the “Secretary of War” in all official communications, the White House had confirmed.

On Thursday night Hegseth posted the words “DEPARTMENT OF WAR” on X.

However, to rename the Pentagon will need congressional approval and the White House has said Hegseth will now start the process.

Back in August Trump told reporters, “It used to be called the Department of War, and it had a stronger sound.

“And as you know, we won World War One, we won World War Two. We won everything. Now we have a Department of Defence with defenders.”

Last week Trump told reporters, “Everybody likes that we had an unbelievable history of victory when it was the Department of War.

“Then we changed it to Department of Defense.”

It is believed that renaming the Pentagon will cost tens of millions as letterheads, building signs and US bases globally will all be changed.

Democratic senator Tammy Duckworth, a member of the armed services committee said, “Why not put this money toward supporting military families or toward employing diplomats that help prevent conflicts from starting in the first place?
