Russia conducting mobile ‘tactical nuclear’ drills in Ukrainian battlefields in ‘readiness for combat’

31st Jul 24 2:05 pm

Russia has started their third stage of nuclear drills using mobile “Iskander-M operational-tactical missile systems” in the battlefield of Occupied Ukraine.

The Russian Defence Ministry said on Wednesday the training is to test their Armed Forces readiness to launch tactical nuclear weapons in the battlefield, according to the Kremlin.

The nuclear drills will take place in Central district and also the southern military district which is in Ukraine, the Kyiv Independent reported.

Russian nuclear forces will practice “equipping launch vehicles and covertly advancing to positions to prepare for electronic launches.”

Russian forces are training to be ready for the “combat use” of the non-strategic nuclear weapons” for operational missions.

On Telegram the Defence Ministry said, “During the exercise, issues of preparing units of the armed forces of the Russian Federation for the combat use of non-strategic nuclear weapons will be worked out.

“As part of this exercise, the personnel of the missile formations of the Southern and Central military districts will work out combat training tasks of obtaining special training ammunition for the Iskander-M operational-tactical missile systems, equipping launch vehicles with them and covertly advancing to designated positions in preparation for conducting electronic launchers.

The Ministry’s statement added, “The ongoing stage of the exercise is aimed at gaining the readiness of personnel and equipment of units for the combat use of non-strategic nuclear weapons to Russia to carry out combat missions.”

In May Vladimir Putin ordered the first stage of nuclear drills in response to “provocative statements” issued by the West.

A non-strategic nuclear weapon (NSNW) is for use on the battlefield and their primary use is to be used in close proximity or even in contested territory, such as the annexed areas of Ukraine that Putin claims is now part of the Russian Federation.

The Russian President has threatened that Moscow will “make use of all weapon systems available to us” if any part of the Russian Federation is threatened, this includes the Ukrainian occupied territories.

Previously NATO’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that Putin “knows very well that a nuclear war should never be fought and cannot be won,” however Putin uses nuclear threats and rhetoric in an attempt to deter the alliance.
