Flybe is reported to be at the risk of collapse and is allegedly holding talks with the Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy.
Flybe is Europe’s largest regional airline and operates more UK domestic flights than any other airline.
The airline is reportedly in talks with the government over emergency financing after suffering severe losses, the airline has already been bailed out once before, Sky News has reported.
Flybe flights are operating as normal.
The airline said they are focussing on “providing great service and connectivity for our customers, to ensure that they can continue to travel as planned.
“We don’t comment on rumour or speculation.”
The airline is based in Exeter and carries 8m passengers each year to 170 destinations, should the airline collapse over 2,000 jobs could be lost.
Brian Strutton the general secretary of pilots’ union Balpa said, “I am appalled that once again the future of a major UK airline and hundreds of jobs is being discussed in secret with no input from employees or their representatives.
“According to reports, the airline could have collapsed over the weekend, which would have been devastating news.”
Ben Bradshaw, Labour MP for Exeter, said Flybe has called on the government to intervene, they provide a “valuable connectivity throughout the UK.
“Brexit and the way the government’s aviation taxes hit a regional airline like Flybe have been a double whammy for the company and, I would expect the government to work closely with its management to secure the future of such a strategically important business.”
