The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been called on to take “all possible measures to stop Russian nuclear terrorism” as two cruise missiles came “dangerously close” to a nuclear reactor in Ukraine.

Ukraine’s nuclear agency EnergoAtom said that two cruise missiles came in close proximity to the South Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plant, located near the city of Yuzhnoukrainsk.

Once again Europe came close to a “nuclear catastrophe” following the near miss at the nuclear power plant.

EnergoAtom said in a statement, “The aerial objects were moving along the Southern Bug river in the direction of the city of Pervomaisk, Mykolaiv region, and flew dangerously close to the nuclear facility.

“The threat of hitting the reactor with possible consequences – a nuclear catastrophe – was again high.”

Russian news aggregator website Readovka, has called on the Russian Army to force nuclear plant shutdowns to take aim at electrical substations.

The Institute for the Study of War warned that any attacks by Russia would make it “very difficult” to then restart the nuclear plants at the substations are designed to ensure they operate safely.

The ISW said there is no evidence to support that Russia is or will do this, but they added, it is “not beyond the realm” of Vladimir Putin or the Kremlin to take such action in Ukraine.

Should a Russian missile accidentally hits one of 15 nuclear reactors there is a real risk of radioactive pollution in Europe.

Lada Roslycky, founder of the Ukraine-based Black Trident defence and security group, said, “From a military perspective and a defence perspective it would be an idiotic action,” and she does not believe this will happen.

But she added that the Russian backed rebels in Donbas do not have high precision weapons so this raises the chances of an accident happening.

“I really don’t think they would do it [attack nuclear facilities] but it’s possible … it’s such a wonderful, brilliant instrument,” to apply fear through psychological warfare, to threaten attacking such facilities Roslycky said.

The Conflict and Environment Observatory (CEOBS) previously said they are “right to be concerned about Ukraine’s 15 ageing Soviet-design nuclear reactors.”

The observatory added, “The three reactors at the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant and the six reactors at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant are the two sites most likely to be affected by a Russian invasion.”
