Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has been sheltering in the Ecuadorian Embassy in South Kensington since June 2012 – and that’s come at more than a little cost to the Metropolitan Police, which has to police the building constantly.

The Met has spent £5.9m between June 2012 and March this year, according to a Freedom of Information request from LBC.

Met police have to to stay outside the building so they can arrest Assange if he steps onto British soil, so they can then extradite him to Sweden.

LBC estimates that the total cost of policing the embassy will now have risen to £6.06m, accounting for the month that has passed since those figures were obtained.
