The British government has asked Iraq to allow British troops to remain to fight against IS after the parliament voted for US troops to leave the country following Qasem Soleimani’s assassination in Baghdad last week.

The US military has around 5,200 troops and the UK has around 400, if all troops where to leave Iraq this could cripple that fight against the terrorist group Islamic State.

A government spokesman said, “The coalition is in Iraq to help protect Iraqis and others from the threat from Daesh [Islamic State], at the request of the Iraqi government.

“We urge the Iraqi government to ensure the coalition is able to continue our vital work countering this shared threat.”
