The unemployment rate in the UK dropped 0.1% from March-May 2013 to June-August 2013, and now stands at 7.7%, official figures showed today. This is down 0.2% on the same quarter last year.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that the number of people unemployed in the UK fell by 18,000 in the June-August period, to 2.49 million.
The number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance last month fell by 41,700 to 1.35 million. This was the biggest drop since June 1997.
Average earnings rose by 0.7% in the year to August, but are 0.5% down on July.
In better news, employment rose by 155,000 to 29.87m in June to August.
