UK to impose sanctions on Belarus over human rights violations

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has told the House of Commons that the UK are preparing to impose sanctions on Belarus.

This comes as Belarus have held fraudulent elections and are accused of human rights violations against their citizens.

Alexander Lukashenko was sworn in illegally as the president in a secret ceremony has a “wholesale lack of legitimacy,” and he is not recognised as the president of Belarus by many world leaders and more importantly, by most Belarusians.

Raab told MPs in the Commons, “It is critical that those responsible for the fraudulent elections and human rights violations are held to account.

“So, we are willing to join the EU in adopting targeted sanctions against those responsible for violence, repression and vote rigging in Belarus.”
