Pie makers have said there is a shortage of foil tins which is threatening bakeries as the ongoing supply chain issues are getting worse.

This year the price of aluminum has soared by 48% to a global 23-year high which has hit large companies such as Pukka Pies.

China is the largest producer of aluminum which has been hit with supply, but high demand has seen global prices hit £2,303 a ton.

Pukka Pie chief executive Isaac Fisher told the Sun, “There’s no doubt there are big challenges in the foil market.

“Demand during the pandemic, coupled with labour shortages and inflation, have created a perfect storm.

“As the People’s Pie, it’s our No 1 priority to keep feeding the nation. We’ve taken steps to make sure our bakery has a continued supply of foils.”

The aluminum tin foil is essential for pies as it acts as a barrier which protects the bottom of the pie and the crust from overbaking.

The UK are facing the “perfect storm” as quiche lorraine, other classic pastry’s such as Christmas mince pies could see a shortage this festive season.
