In a strongly worded tweet, President Donald Trump said today that the US Constitution does not guarantee the right to citizenship to everyone born in the country.
“So-called Birthright Citizenship, which costs our Country billions of dollars and is very unfair to our citizens, will be ended one way or the other. It is not covered by the 14th Amendment because of the words ‘subject to the jurisdiction thereof.’ Many legal scholars agree…..” Trump wrote in a Twitter post today.
Trump is seeking to end this 150-year-old policy as he says it “costs our Country billions of dollars and is very unfair to our citizens.”

Trump also added that the issue would ultimately be decided by the Supreme Court.
Legal experts, according to Washington Post, have debated for years how to interpret the citizenship clause of the 14th Amendment, but most agree that it, in fact, grants citizenship to those born on US soil.
