Tesco will launch its own tablet device, and you can expect to see it on shelves by Christmas this year. We don’t know yet how much it will cost, but sources told the Sunday Times it will be “high quality” and similar to Amazon’s Kindle.
The tablet will go on sale pre-loaded with music, ebooks and films, and will feature apps for shopping with Tesco and for its banking services, as well as for using Blinkbox, the movie-streaming service it bought an 80% share in, in 2011.
Tesco’s shares fell 5% in June as like-for-like sales dropped by 1% in the UK in the 13 weeks to May 25, and it is clearly trying to find new revenue streams to tap.
